Consult the Manual (To the Text)

“To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn,” (Isaiah 8:20; NASB)

A young man settles into his chair for the night mentally preparing himself for the next eight hours. He orients himself to the desk in front of him: the switch board, the computer, the radio, and the big, black binder which simply reads Security Manual. His sergeant, having settled in opposite him on the other side of the room, begins with his instruction, “You have learned a lot in the last week. Tonight, I will ask you a lot of questions. It’s your job tonight to forget everything you have learned. Anytime I ask you a question, there is only one proper answer.”

“What is that?” the young man asks.

“For the rest of the night, anytime I ask you anything,” the sergeant replies, “the only proper answer is: ‘I will consult the manual.’”

This was the last night I worked with my sergeant before going solo as a night shift security dispatcher during my time at Bible college. Not only did my sergeant tell me that the only proper answer was to consult the manual, but he held me to it. Any time for the rest of the night, anytime I attempted to give him any answer other than ‘I will consult the manual’ he would immediately stop me and correct me.

Every Tuesday for the foreseeable future, I invite you to join us as we at Citizen Priest come to ‘consult the manual.’ Lord willing, we will begin next week with a yearlong survey of the first letter from the Apostle Peter. We will learn how it is that we became Citizen Priests, and how we might live our lives accordingly.
